State Govt seeks more time on releasing of salary to SSA teachers

Shillong, Sept 13: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government has sought for more time to be able to release the salary of teachers teaching in SSA-funded schools in the state.

This was informed by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma during a meeting with a delegation of the Meghalaya Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Schools’ Association (MSSASA) in the Secretariat on Thursday evening.

The salary of over 12,000 teachers is pending for five months.

MSSASA president Aristotle C Rymbai said, “He (CM) informed us that the government needs another three to four weeks to be able to release the pending salary.”

Rymbai informed that the chief minister has assured the delegation that the state government was committed to ensure that the teachers get their salary at the existing rate at Rs 19,000 and Rs 20,000 per teacher per month.

“We were also informed that the government would require Rs 150 crore for releasing the pending salary,” he said.

The state government has been asked to bear additional expenditure for paying the salary teachers of SSA-funded schools after the Project Approval Board (PAB) had approved only Rs 15,000 per month for lower primary teachers and Rs 20,000 for upper primary teachers.

The MSSASA will hold its central executive committee meeting to discuss and decide whether to accept the request of the state government as teachers has been facing a lot of difficulties due to the delay in releasing their salary.
