Shot in the arm for Congress in Garo Hills as former RBI official joins party to support Dr Mukul

Tura Apr 2: The Opposition Congress got a shot in the arm on Tuesday after former Chief General Manager of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Beryl B Sangma joined the party in support of former Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma, who is contesting from Tura Lok Sabha constituency which goes to elections in the first phase on April 11.

“Having been a Senior Executive of RBI, I have seen the destructive damages done by the economic and fiscal policies of the BJP and NPP governments. Now I am giving awareness to the people their fallacies and hollow election promises,’ Beryl said.

Disclosing that various political parties had approached him to join their political party, Beryl said, “I have decided to join the Congress and support Dr Mukul after conducting my own study that this is the only political party which is actually working for the development of Garo Hills and Meghalaya as a whole.”

Dr Mukul, who is currently the Leader of Opposition in the 10th Meghalaya Assembly, is facing former Union Minister Agatha Sangma of the National People’s Party and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, Rikman G. Momin.

Praising the former Chief Minister for restoring peace in the five districts of Garo Hills which was once hit by militancy problem, Beryl said, “He (Dr jusMukul) has done so much for the State including creation of new districts, civil sub divisions, police stations, opened up many schools, technical institutes, colleges, institutes of higher learning, hospitals, built good roads and bridges and improved the communication.”
