Meghalaya NCP chief says MHIS is a failed scheme

Shillong, Jan 15: Newly president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Saleng A. Sangma said the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) is one of the “failed” schemes of the ruling Congress.

“The Congress has failed in various fronts and one of them is the MHIS,” Sangma told media persons here on Monday.

He said that the people of the state were assured of Rs 2 lakh health coverage under the scheme but whether it is reaching to poor families is a big question.

Saleng said that he brought a number of cancer patients to the North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) but the patients did not get the benefits from MHIS.

Commenting on eight years of Mukul Sangma as chief minister of the state, the NCP state president pointed out the sorry state of affairs in health sector.

PHCs or CHCs, are not having proper facilities to even diagnose simple disease, Saleng said, while pointing out lack of man power and medicines.

He also alleged that the Congress was misusing the Meghalaya Livestock Mission ahead of Assembly elections and did not even train the people.

According to Saleng, even the financial inclusion scheme has also affected the people as banks continue to deduct from their wages for repayment of loan.

He also slammed the BJP which is trying to make inroads in Meghalaya of attempting to revive the caste system in the country.

“They are not only about Hindutva but they are also trying to bring caste system,” he said.

Stating that the BJP will no suppress its own people in the party, Saleng “Our tribal people who are in the BJP even if they are elected, they will be put at the last bench.”.
