Meghalaya (Benami Transactions Prohibition) (Amendment) Bill, 2018 passed in Assembly

Shillong, Sept 27: The Meghalaya (Benami Transactions Prohibition) (Amendment) Bill, 2018 along with seven other Bills were passed by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on the concluding day of the Autumn Session on Thursday.

Tabled by Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma in the Assembly, the Meghalaya (Benami Transactions Prohibition) (Amendment) Bill, 2018 is proposed to amend certain provisions of the Meghalaya (Benami Transactions Prohibition) Act, 1980 (Meghalaya Act No 24 of 1980) by inserting section 2 (e) and Section 2 (f).

“It is also proposed to amend Sub-section (1) of Section 4 of the Meghalaya (Benami Transactions Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2016 of Act No. 4 of 2016 to enable the state government to constitute a committee or an authority in each district for receiving and causing verification of a complaint or information of a transaction in benami in the state,” it stated.

It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya (Benami Transactions Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2016 was passed by the state government as part of its endeavor to come up with comprehensive mechanisms to check influx and illegal immigration into the state.

The other Bills passed includes the Meghalaya Regulation of the Game of Arrow Shooting and the Sale of Teer Tickets Bill, 2018, the Meghalaya Essential Services Maintenance (Amendment) Bill, 2018, Meghalaya Appropriation (No III) Bill, 2018, Meghalaya Protection of Interest of Depositors (In Financial Establishments) Bill, 2018, Meghalaya Societies Registration (Amendment) Bill, 2018, Meghalaya Passengers and Goods Taxation (Amendment) Bill, 2018, and Meghalaya (Taking Over of District Council Lower Primary School Amendment) Bill, 2018
