Shillong, Nov 3: The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) management on Friday assured its workers that payment of latest minimum wage rate would start soon and the arrears due to be paid to workers would also be released.

The assurances of the MeECL management came during an official meeting called by State Labour Commissioner, B. Mawlong, where representatives of the MeECL management and the representatives of MPWU, including Mantiphrang Lyngdoh (President), Ms. Anjelina Hynniewta (General Secretary), Ms. Angela Rangad (Executive Committee member), Mr. Jethaniel Marak (Vice President) attended.

The meeting was held after talks between the MeECL management and representatives of MPWU broke down on November 1 due to “ignorance” of the trade Union law on the part of MeECL.

At the meeting a preliminary discussion was held on the charter of demands submitted by the MPWU.

Though the MeECL management stated that the flawed contract agreement as demanded by the Union has been withdrawn, the Union however insisted that an official written notification in this regard is essential to avoid arbitrariness.

The MeECL Management also said that the payment of latest minimum wage rate shall start soon and the arrears due to the workers shall also be released.

“The management promised that all statutory benefits like PF, ESI, Leave, Overtime etc. would feature in any new work agreement. But representatives of the MPWU insisted that all assurances have to be met within a specific timeframe,” the MPWU said in a statement.

The Labour Commissioner also instructed the MeECL management representatives to familiarize themselves with the Supreme Court Order of October 26, 2016 about Equal Pay for Equal Work in order to figure the modalities of its implementation.

The MPWU has demanded immediate implementation of equal pay for equal work while they await fulfillment of their demand for regularisation.

Meanwhile the MPWU expressed its appreciation for active intervention of the Labour Department in this Labour Dispute in MeECL
