DGCA asked to submit list of obstacles to be removed for landing of big aircraft at Umroi airport

Shillong July 2: The Meghalaya High Court has directed the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to submit a list of obstacles required to be removed in order to ensure landing of Boeing Aircraft at the Umroi airport.

The order was passed by the division bench of Meghalaya High Court which comprised of Chief Justice, Ajay Kumar Mittal and Justice, HS Thangkhiew on Tuesday.

During the course of hearing on the matter, counsel for DGCA informed the court that without cutting of cluster-I, it will not be possible to grant permission for landing of regular turbojet i.e, Boeing Aircraft at Umroi airport.

The counsel for DGCA further submitted that cutting of cluster-I would entail an expenditure of Rs 8,000 crore.

However, Amicus Curiae, P.Yobin pointed out that similar situation exists at the airports of Mizoram, Sikkim and Leh where DGCA had already accorded approval and Boeing Aircrafts are landing.

In view of this, the bench in its order directed the DGCA to produce the entire record regarding grant of sanction for landing of turbojet at the three airports – Mizoram, Sikkim and Leh and the details of the amount of Rs 8,000 crore be furnished in the form of an affidavit.

“DGCA shall also submit the list of obstacles, which according to them, are required to be removed before sanction could be accorded to the Airport Authority of India for landing of turbojet,” the court said.

The hearing will be again held on July 15.
