Conrad: Allegations reflect deep sense of desperation by leader of opposition

Meghalaya cabinet regularizes payment of 100 percent stamp duties by tribal mining lease holders

Shillong, Nov 28: The ruling National People’s Party on Saturday hit back at Leader of Opposition Dr. Mukul Sangma of the Congress, who has been labeling charges against the ruling party on issues of alleged corruption on various fronts.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma termed the allegations of derailing investigation in the IRS Scam and corruption in MeECL – by the former Chief Minister as “acts of desperation.”

“This allegation reflects deep sense of desperation on the LO. It looks like they (opposition) have run out of issues related to governance and now they are resorting to personal attacks at the family level which is very unfortunate,” the Chief Minister retorted.

Sangma said that this particular case happened in 2017 when tDr. Sangma was the Chief Minister and the investigation started that time itself. The Chief Minister added that the investigation went on for two years and subsequent transfer and postings of the police officers were routine in nature.

“In due course of time whatever transfers and postings that need to be done on a normal basis was done not just for one or two individuals but for many officials through out the system and not at all done with any kind of intention as being alleged by the LO,” the Chief Minister clarified.

Sangma also pointed out that there was time when the leader of opposition was the Chief Minister and a situation of a prostitution racket, being run in a guest house owned by the then Home Minister came up.

“That time within one month’s time the concerned investigation officer was transferred for whatever reason and if that was not the interference in the investigation, then what else? They did that during their time, which I feel was very wrong as they should have allowed the investigation to continue like in this case, investigation went on for two years,” the Chief Minister said.

On demands made by the leader of opposition to convene the State Security Commission meeting, he said due to COVID situation, CAA the government was not able to call the meeting.

“The state security commission of course requires us to call a meeting on a regular basis but it is not that it was being earlier done regularly as it was not that regular and based on the needs and requirements in that point in time, the meetings were called. Therefore, if situation requires, definitely we will call and when situation improves will ensure that it would be on a regular basis,” Sangma added.

On inflated rates quoted on Saubhagya scheme, he said it is very unfortunate that the opposition keep on repeating the same points again and again.

“Now, if opposition thinks that just by them repeating again and again that this is black, this black, this is black, everybody will believe that it is black, that does not the way things work,” the Chief Minister said.

Sangma said that if there was some kind of a situation where it was not properly done, the government of India would have intervened.
