Shillong, Aug 30: State Minister of Labour, Sanbor Shullai who is in New Delhi met Union Minister of Labour and Employment Bhupendra Yadav.
During his meeting with Yadav, the state Labour Minister said that even though economic resources are limited, the people in Meghalaya are hardworking and predominantly confined to unorganized sectors such as domestic workers, home-based workers, self-employed workers or wage workers, taxi drivers, vegetable and fruit sellers.
According to Shullai as per the Supreme Court judgment dated June 29, 2021, the Ministry has created the National Data on Unorganized Workers (NDUW) portal for online registration of the unorganized workers/ labourers for seeking help from the Central Government.
“The Labour Department, Meghalaya will be leaving no stone unturned to ensure that maximum number of unorganized workers/ labourers are registered on the NDUW online portal,†Shullai said.
According to him, the state is also encouraging the unorganized workers/ labourers to obtain Aadhar card, open a bank account linked to a mobile number for successful online registration.
“We will be educating the unorganized workers/labourers about the benefits of JAM (Jan Dhan Yojana bank account, Aadhar Card and Mobile phone linked to the bank account) which is introduced by the government of India to facilitate Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to all the eligible unorganized workers/ labourers,†Shullai said.
He informed that in this regard, he has requested the Uninion Labour Minister to consider a special economic package for the unorganized workers from Meghalaya who got registered under the NDUW portal as a mark of appreciation and goodwill gesture by the Ministry on the Golden Jubilee occasion of Meghalaya’s statehood.
“We will be looking forward to your Ministry, for generous allocation of funds, guidance and handholding in executing all the developmental schemes initiated by your Ministry for the welfare and immediate benefit of all the workers/labourers in Meghalaya,†Shullai added.
