Shillong, Jun 18: The death toll due to rain induced landslide in the state has gone upto 18 after authorities recovered the body of Robino Kynter of Kenmynsaw under Mawsynram Community and Rural Development Block.
He was reported missing during the landslide at Kenmynsaw village. His body was retrieved late on Friday night.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department heavy to very heavy rain with isolated extremely heavy rainfall is very likely to continue over Meghalaya during the next five days.
Meanwhile, Sohra on June 18 received 120.5 mm of rainfall while Mawsynram received 118.0 mm of rainfall during the same period.
Jowai, West Jaintia Hills district received 112.4 mm of rainfall, Mawkyrwat, South-West Khasi Hills received 114.0 mm and Shillong received 19.6 mm.
Moreover, Governor Satya Pal Malik has condoled the loss of lives due to rains.
“I’m deeply pained by the loss of precious lives due to incessant and extremely heavy rainfall which has disrupted life in the entire state,†Malik said.
The Governor also said that the government is proactively taking all the necessary remedial and relief measures to address the situation.
He also urged everyone to be careful while venturing out.
According to Malik he has discussed the current situation with the Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma who is closely monitoring the situation.
The Governor said that the Chief Minister has assured him that necessary action is being taken.
The East Khasi Hills district administration informed that a house belonging to Pyntngen Khongsit of Kshaid village under Laitkroh Khatarshnong Block was reported damaged due to landslide.
Authorities also informed that roads and bridges were damaged due to landslides and heavy rains.
The footbridge at Sonatola, Mawsynram Community and Rural Development Block was fully damaged; Suspension bridge at Suktia under Shella-Bholaganj Community and Rural Development Block was also fully damaged.
The SPV road at Pyrkan-Shella under Shella-Bholaganj Block was also damaged but is now restored and open for traffic and the Nongjri-Bholaganj road under Pynursla Block is also damaged and yet to open for traffic.
