Shillong, Aug 14: Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma on Saturday said that the police had “tangible†evidence of the involvement of former HNLC militant Cheristerfield Thangkhiew in the IED blasts in Khliehriat and Shillong.
“After going into a large amount of information and detailed investigation the police had found credible and tangible evidence of the involvement of large number of people including the individual who died in the police firing,†Sangma said.
The Chief Minister also informed that based on this critical information the police has made their strategy on how to move forward but in the meantime from multiple agencies they received credible information that there would be another attempt to trigger a blast in the next few days in Shillong.
Sangma said that these inputs were not just from the state government’s agencies, but from other too.
He pointed out that once those agencies and the state’s own information and intel gave them the threat of another attempt which would risk the life of the citizens of the state police decided to move swiftly in order to ensure that no other incidents take place.
The Chief Minister also said that it was never the intention of the police to harm any individuals even as he added that what happened was “unfortunateâ€.
According to Sangma, arresting Thangkhiew would have been in the interest of the state police since they would have been able to get more credible information on other networks that possibly are there.
He also informed that police has submitted the report on the death of Thangkhiew as mandated by the National Human Right Commission (NHRC) even as he added that instituting a magisterial inquiry is also under process.
