SHILLONG, MAY 3: NGOs of the state today resolved to meet all the three MPs of both houses – Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to discuss on the proposed amendments to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the 12 social organizations which include Khasi Students’ Union, Meghalaya Indigenous Peoples Forum, Synjuk Nongsynshar Shnong ka Bri Hynniewtrep,North East Students’ Organisation, Federation of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo People, Federation of Khasi States, Garo Students’ Union, Ka Dorbar ki Khlieh Nongsynshar ka Ri Hynniewtrep, Hynniewtrep National Youth Front, ADE, AYWO and KKTMS.

 The meeting took note of the recent statement of the Government of India that the proposed Amendments to the Sixth Schedule will be tabled in the next session of Parliament after being approved by the Union Cabinet.

“We have decided to write to all the three Members of Parliament of the state including VH Pala, MP (Shillong), Conrad Sangma, MP (Tura) , and Wansuk Syiem, MP Rajya Sabha urging upon them to make available of the latest official copy of the proposed Amendment Bill of the Sixth Schedule,” NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa said.

 He said that meeting also resolved to seek an audience with all the three MPs at the earliest possible time to have a thorough discussion on this very sensitive issue which will affect the microscopic indigenous communities of the state before it is too late.
