Shillong, Aug 23: Private university, Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) has appointed Dr. Vincent T. Darlong as its new vice-chancellor.
Darlong succeeded former Meghalaya home and education minister, Robert G. Lyngdoh, who took over as the second vice-chancellor of MCLU in 2013 from his predecessor, Glenn C. Kharkongor.
A statement issued by the university said that Darlong has eminent record of achievements.
His academic career was in the field of Zoology where he completed his PhD on the topic “Impact of shifting cultivation on soil fauna” in 1987 from North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong.
“His key areas of professional exposure and interests are in natural resource management and livelihoods, community based biodiversity conservation and community forestry, environment and social impact assessments, research and development in rural development, natural resources among others,” the statement said.
According to the university, Dr. Darlong has contributed immensely to the community through numerous technical papers which were presented in the national and international seminars and also has published numerous books.
“Looking into the contribution of Dr. Darlong, he has highlighted issues faced by the indigenous people especially youth and women of North East India in areas of rural farming and livelihoods, forestry, land rights. Apart from his engagement with the communities in North East India, Dr Darlong has also contributed to the Government of India in various task force and working groups/committees at different capacities,” the MLCU’s statement added.
